OpenSolaris OpenIndiana ZFS Storage Server

Update: After the acquisition of Sun by Oracle in 2010, Oracle has killed OpenSolaris. I needed a new solution. It turns out that the folks at the Illumos Foundation have started OpenIndiana to carry the torch. Thanks!!!.

I have been having this issue. I have a lot of media and files but no place to put them. It seems that with hard drives growing, there is just too much data. Lots of data. I was looking for a solution.

What I found was ZFS.

I am running two Servers: an Legacy Opensolaris x64 OS SunOS 5.11 snv_134, and a modern OpenIndiana server.

Media Server (Legacy)

• Asus A8V - Deluxe Motherboard
• AMD Athlon 64 3700
• 3 GB Memory
• Dual Netgear GA311 in a teamed configuration
• SUPERMICRO AOC-SAT2-MV8 (PCI) SATA controller
• Zpool 1 - 3x 1TB raidz
• • Shared with windows hosts via samba
• Zpool 2 3x 500GB

File Server

• Abit Aw9d-max Motherboard
• Intel Core2 Duo 6600
• 8 GB Memory
• Intel Nics in a teamed configuration
• I am strictly using ICH9, and Sil 3132 onboard SATA controllers (for Now)
• Zpool 1 - 4x 1TB mirrored stipe sets (ZFS Raid 10)
• • Shared with windows hosts via CIFS
